What is PDF?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. A PDF file is specifically designed to be distributed electronically across the World Wide Web. PDF files can be downloaded, viewed, and printed from several different platforms with the page layout and typography of the original document intact.

World Wide Web browser applications, which navigate, view and retrieve information from the Web, generally do not view the PDF format directly. Special software, like Adobe Acrobat Reader, can function as a "helper application" to a browser which supports that feature. For example, when you download a PDF file using a web browser, the browser can automatically open the PDF file in Acrobat Reader.
